New Hunter S. Thompson Documentary

Dear Friends,
This is a VERY funny and poignant film director Blue Kraning made about Hunter S. Thompson. You can follow this link to where the trailer is posted up on Tribe:

http://people.tribe.net/ef16dbc2-...e40916ff6d

or you can follow the other links to his website www.gonzopatriots.com to see the trailer and buy the film.

I went ahead and copied the text from the tribe page below so you get a better idea of the work.

Please support the spirit of independence in which this film was made AND BUY THIS FILM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Much Love To All,
Lisa Ferguson (aka Petunia Maple Cake)

New Hunter S. Thompson Documentary
This is the trailer for the fun-loving but poignant film that is a tribute to Gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson, and a document of how his legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of his fans. Blasted!!! follows the many "Gonzo Patriots" across America that volunteered their personally owned artillery to fulfill the good doctor's last wish to have his ashes fired from a cannon. Before Johnny Depp became involved with the ceremony, and paid over 2 million dollars for a professional fireworks company to blast his friend's ashes from a 200 foot tall 'Gonzo fist,' an essay contest was held by the Aspen Daily News (at the request of Hunter's family) to see who would be available to provide the service of firing his ashes. Over 50 private cannon owners applied and though these letters were published in Harper's magazine, these brave men and women, who had come forward to fulfill the dying wish of their hero...were eventually forgotten.

DVD's for this film can be purchased at www.gonzopatriots.com

Blue Kraning, Los Angeles based documentary director and Emmy Award winning writer, has just released the DVD of his film, Blasted, The Gonzo Patriots of Hunter S. Thompson, which recently premiered at the Starz Denver International Film Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Three years in the making, this film is a tribute to a great journalist and renowned physician. Kraning says the film, “is intended for any fan of Hunter S. Thompson or just anyone who likes to see large stuffed animals blown to bits by a homemade Bowling Ball Cannon fired by a man in a purple polyester suit, or see transgender Civil War re-enactors blast their aptly named mountain howitzer...’Lucrecia,’ while reciting Hunter’s wisdom. I made this film entirely as a one-man-band, in the tradition of Gonzo individuality and artistic freedom, so I will be distributing the film entirely by myself by selling the film off my website at www.gonzopatriots.com”

"Hunter S. Thompson embodied the American ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Blue Kraning's Blasted!!! is a twisted, anarchic, fun, and funny tribute to Hunter, those ideals, and Americans who don't merely mouth the Declaration of Independence, but live it." - Michael Simmons, The Huffington Post

“These are not the famous actors, politicians or even journalists. These are Hunter's readers who are “his people” in the purest sense, an army of thoughtful citizens who are inspired by Hunter's work and who do a fine job of carrying on his legacy.” –Anita Thompson, wife of the late author, Hunter S. Thompson

I'm of the mind that it makes no sense to have the ability to communicate and NOT have an audience for that communication. Therefore, I feel the need to ask those who are more persuasive than I am (and that's the vast majority of people) to persuade people to buy my comics and such. Just wanted to bring that up.
http://www.comicspace.com/timelike01/comics.php?action=gallery&comic_id=7333
For those who don't know (and that's most of you), Whiners is a web comic miniseries I creatred that deals with a small group of whiny cats and their human friend as they travel to other universes in search of a world where cat persecution doesn't exist. After all, cat persecution is one of the most prominent and obscene cliches in history. Whiners represents a more creative view of the cat bashing cliche in that it regards that mess as the mess that it is. Very rare in today's modern dystopia.

Give the public what they want -- NOT!

I've been told my numerous people that the only way I'll be able to successfully sell my comics is if I give the comic-reading public what they want. because apparently the way I do comics is not what the public wants. In other words, my comics present unpopular imagery as well as unpopular ideas. Now I fully understand the reasoning behind that. But I still reject the "normal" way of doing comics because (1) I live in a free country where freedom of expression exists and (2) I live in a world where the human population is over 6 billion.

It may be true that I wont make money doing comics the way I want. But it is also true that I have a consitutional right to produce comics the way I want. That also means I have the right to produce comics that are unpopular and unprofitable. As for the population of 6 billion issue, there is a lot of diversity amongst such a vast and inconcievably high population. Therefore, people who have the mentality to appreciate my comics are very likely to exist. The only problem here is the extreme difficulty in finding such people. Other than that, I should -- in theory -- be ale to do comics the way I want and find a small yet substantial number of people who can appreciate them.

Of course there's a good chance that many of you will disagree with my position here. Whatever. But in any event, I still believe that I should do comics my way whether they meet the public's approval or not. Life is already boring enough as it is.

Call for Papers: Small Presses/Little Magazines/Mimeo Revolution

Small Presses/Little Magazines of the Mimeograph Revolution: Their
Audiences and the Role of Printing Technologies
Proposed Panel for The Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and
Publishing (SHARP) Conference, Minneapolis, Minnesota
July 11-15, 2007

The readership for twentieth century little magazines and small presses has
often been considered a narrow one, with the majority of readers being those
interested in experimental or avant-garde literature. The Mimeograph
Revolution of the 1960s resulted in an explosion in the number of little
magazines and small presses, particularly in the United States, Canada and
the UK. While the focus continued to be on new writing, the community of
publishers and writers of this movement brought a grassroots ethos to
literary publishing in opposition to what was perceived to be the domination
of academic criticism and the commercialization of mainstream publishing.
As Curt Johnson and Diane Kruchkow have stated, the 1960s small press
provided an environmentin which one could discover literature first-hand.

In recognition of SHARPs 2007 theme, Open the Book, Open the Mind, this
panel seeks to explore how this discovery took place for readers of these
publications by examining the role of different printing technologies and
production methods employed during this revolution and how they affected
the target audience for these publications. Exactly what were the production
methods used under the banner of the Mimeo Revolution and how did they
differ from each other and from publications of earlier eras? What, if any,
divergences were seen in the traditional audience for literary work produced
by little magazines and small presses? How did this grassroots effort
differentiate itself from the more conservative academic quarterlies and
commercial publishers? The panel encourages papers that take a historical
look at literary publishing with a focus on the publication and production
of these works, rather than a critique of the work within, or how the styles
of writing originating during this time affected the publication of that
work. Papers may examine individual presses or magazines or take a wider
view of the era.

The "Non-Poetry" Poet

Daniel Roth, the "anti-poetry poet", has released Ordinary Life in Three Acts ( www.ordinarylifeinthreeacts.com), to share his reductive
poetry with the world and to raise proceeds, taken from the book's profits, for Doctors Without Borders. Daniel proves that truth can be
found in the most reductive of poetic structure. Fluffy and elaborate verse is unnecessary when it comes to expressing the beauty and
rawness of life. When asked "Why reductive?" he said that, "People seem to range between dislike and indifference when it comes to
poetry. It often obscures. Readers tend to feel stupid because so many poems appear to make no sense. I have no need to confuse anyone."

This collection of poems reflects the arc of Daniel's life. From fish fries in Mississippi, juke joints in South Central L.A.,
barefoot dances under the Sahara Desert sky, to whirling on the beaches of Morocco to the trance of Gnawa music, these poems reflect
a joy, a curiosity and love of what is best, most authentic in people and cultures all over the planet. The poems are about love, loss,
curiosity, a life embraced in all its turmoil, richness and heartbreak.

Please visit the Ordinary Life in Three Acts website where you can read poetry and book reviews, order a copy, email comments to
the poet, or just watch one of his many dances in the desert on film. If you resonate with what you see, please send this on to your email groups because this is an
attempt to break past the old paradigm of publishing houses. This book is only being promoted through the internet to show that information,
whether it is art, poetry, or news, can be spread no matter what. With the internet, we now have the freedom to share anything we want with the world. - Daniel Roth , posted 09/16/06

As you probably know, the main reason why cigarettes and alcohol sell so well is because they are addictive. Therefore, if I could find a way to make my comics addictive, then chances are they will sell very well as well.

Hello, Tribe-folk!

I'm a independent author who's publishing his third novel, which I'm approaching as a "zine book", since I do all the production of it at home, myself. The book is called "Idea in Stone", and it's an alternative, magical realist tale about Edinburgh.

I'm offering this novel to the public as:
- a free e-book download
or
- a hand-made perfect-bound book

...from my website, hamishmacdonald.com

Here's the URL for the book (where you can download a free copy of the e-book, or buy a handmade copy for 5 pounds):
http://www.hamishmacdonald.com/novels_IdeaInStone.htm

And I've posted a press release, if you want any more details:
http://www.hamishmacdonald.com/PressRelease.htm

Thanks for your interest. (And power to the indies!)

You know, I learned something today. I learned that Detroit is a HORRIBLE place for creative people to live. And I learned that by going to Craig's List. In the Detroit section of the list, I noticed that there are extremely few freelance art jobs in Detroit. But when I went to the New York, Chicago and Los Angeles sections, I noticed those cities have freelance art jobs by the megaton. Therefore if I want to improve my chances of succeeding at art, I need to get my black ass out of Detroit. It's like living amongst the Borg Collective here anyway.

My new Cara Schwartz web comic

Certain people like to tell me that it's impossible for me to have total creative freedom and make profit at the same time. Well, certain recent events have convinced me that they are wrong (or at least mostly inaccurate). I just slapped together a web comic that will provide me with a much bigger audience than ever, and potentially lead me to profitable cartooning ventures. Here's the web comic in question:
http://www.nailbytes1.com/rw02010.htm

I also can't help but to ask why are there so many creative people who oppose creativity? But since that question is off topic here, so I won't go into it any further. But I will say that at least my population of 6 billion theory is accurate. (And please don't give me that "There are billions of people in poverty and the last thing on their minds is looking at web comics. Plus, most of the world's population doesn't have Internet access." stuff. I've known that for years, and I probably knew it before you did!)

Anyway, doing web comics for popular web sites kicks ass!

SNAP! kicked ass!

SNAP! kicked ass! It was the best comic convention I ever did. I made over $35 selling my comics -- an unprecedented success! Also, the con further proved my "Population of 6 Billion" theory. That is, since there's apopulation of 6 billion, there exists a small yet substantial number of people who have the mentality to appreciate my comics! Moreover, the secret to my success at SNAP! doesn't really seem that secret. SNAP! had a focus on small press comics. While the comic cons I previously attended -- which were mostly unsuccessful for me -- had a focus on mainstream comics.

Yup! That's what I'm talkin' about! If you want to sell small press comics at a comic convention, then you need to go to a convention whose focus is on small press comics. Again I say, SNAP! kicked ass, and there's still a population of 6 billion!

Custom comics: Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

Doing custom comic books seems to be the best way to stay in the comic production business as far as I can tell. Because when you give the individual comic book reader what they want, you are virtually guaranteed an audience. If someone tells you what they want in a comic, then all the guesswork is taken out of the usually painful attempt at figuring out what the audience wants. Recently, I was hired to do a custom foot fetish comic book for a rather enthusiastic reader. ("Did you say 'foot fetish comic'?! Holy crap!!" "Whatever!") And I'm getting paid $50 for the deal. If you think that's something, I hear that there may be many more comic fans interested in hiring me to do similar comics. It's a definite decent deal!

Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Doing comics that you enjoy doing and getting paid for doing them. If this thing works out to its fullest, I'm going to make custom comics my main focus in comic book production.

How do you successfully promote comics that have a very unpopular theme without making any changes to such comics? I know there's a good chance that this question can't be adequately answered, but I still think the question is worth asking.

One of the biggest problems with zinedom is OUTDATED INFORMATION. I understand that many zinesters are constantly on the move. But I'm too poor to afford wasting postage writing to a zinester who changed his or her address all of a sudden. Now here's my stupid question of the moment: How do you adequately determine if a zine address you've found is current?

My first 24-hour comic (Mia unua dudek kvar-hora bildgazeto)

I finally got around to printing up copies of my first 24-hour comic. It's called "Gen X Slap Happy Life" ("Geneksa Felic^ega Viv'") and it's written in both English and Esperanto, the international language that combines elements from a number of other languages including English. The theme of the comic deals with what my life might be like if it were perfect. And as an added bit of uniqueness, I also drew most of the comic left-handed even though I'm right-handed. It's an idea I got from my therapist.

Anyway, to get a copy of this comic book, send $2 cash or postal money order to: Slap Happy, P.O. Box 02222, Detroit, MI 48202-9998. It can work for you (I guess).

The Superfuture! is here!

The new mostly-computer-illustrated comic book Adventures in the Superfuture! is here! It's a digest size comic about intergalactic mercenaries, terraforming scientists and an "astrophyisical" women's prison among other things. It's what you might call the Timeliketoon version of Futurama. It only cost $2, so price-wise it's not half-bad. That said, what good is buying a copy of the Superfuture!? The good is that you will get to see a comic that has a fairly unique look and is substantially creative. If you're into that sort of thing, then the Superfuture! should work very well for you.

Anyway, to order a copy of the Superfuture! send $2 cash or postal money order to: Superfuture!, P.O. Box 02222, Detroit, MI 48202-9998. If you still have questions, e-mail: timeliketoons@mail.com

Zine Solar System is what I like to call a zine of zine affairs. It's published quarterly and its contents include an anthology section and a low-cost ad section known as The Timelike Ad Sheet. The anthology section has a variety of submssions in the form of comics, short stories, poetry and other similar works. And the ad section contains full-page ads that cost $4 each. At this point in time, ZSS has no paying positions. But if ZSS reaches a profitable level, then paying positions should be possible. You can send submssions and/or ads to: ZSS, P.O. Box 02222, Detroit, MI 48202-9998.

The computer-generated art for my Adventures on the Superfuture! comic is almost done. I almost wasn't able to get it done at all due to the slowness of my slow, slow, slow computer. But luckily I found a shortcut in the computer art process involving Photoshop. (Yeah! Photoshop rocks!) Anyway, if all works out, the Superfuture! comic will be done as soon as next week. If you want to order a copy in advance (and I say you do), send $2 cash or postal money order to: Superfuture!, P.O. Box 02222, Detroit, MI 48202-9998.

"Work's Up" notice.

...and I'll link to your email address in your bio.
Let me know if this is ok.

Clarify the ending for me.
> on a washing stone in the heat
> and poverty of inconvenience
> South India--
Do you mean: "...and poverty of inconvenient South India" or is
inconvenience the end word?

Nice piece, this. Glad to have it in Niederngasse.
Marie,

We would like to include *Daring Girl* in the Autumn 2004 issue of our
magazine, which will be available in the next couple weeks.

Best wishes,

Editor, Dreamvirus Magazine

I loved "My father has a box of photos," and "AWAKE"
was excellent even though the title is recycled. I
also liked "Film nightmares," but i think you should
choose whether the soldiers ARE Nazi or
Japanese...there's a big difference. Also, i feel you
should make each separate nightmare a separate
stanza...unless i'm reading the poem wrong, there are
3 nightmares? Also think the word "want" can be
replaced in the second to last line.

We can use the 3 poems mentioned above. They will go
online for the month of Oct. Send me a photo of
yourself, if you want. Also, i offer a payment of
$3.33

Thanks,
Patrick

Hey Marie,

Great to hear from you again. Just read the latest batch of Flash Fiction pieces you sent my way. Gotta say I loved 'em! I'll definitely use "swallowing lipstick", "Crimson electric company", "Universal truths", "---waking to a place--some of the words clarify, these I get down..." & "3 trips".

I really admire your work & the range of styles you've mastered. There are a lot of poets in the underground/small press scene who are only content with writing in the BUKOWSKI style of hardluck realism. They also tend to scoff at any poet or poem that deviates from their comfortable little formula. It's refreshing to see that someone with your talent can shake it up branch out. I, for one, really dig metafiction/experimental work--something I attribute to my fascination with the twisted prose of William S. Burroughs & the cinematic genius of David Lynch.

So anyhow, it's always a treat to feature your work on Zygote. Look forward to reading more of your poetic gems in the future.

Take care & keep in touch.
--------
Hi, Marie... Just wanted to let you know I am doing data entry for
Volume 8; Issue One now, and your two poems (Stench too great to endure
and NOW) are in as the opening and closing poems for that issue.
It's "due" to come out next summer, hopefully in June (or July)
assuming we don't run into any incapacitating disasters.

the woman who write with scissors--comments on Blue Language & Big City Savvy chapbooks written by Marie Kazalia

10/25.2K4
I received a flyer for Randy Fingland/Bert Glick poetry reading in Berkeley--
on the back Randy Fingland had printed:

*To the woman who writes with scissors:

Incisive curled viscera worn on the tongue, fleshly apt in the urban towers known for
exotic pasts and emphatic presence, these two controls called Big City Savvy and
Blue Language, must have been assembled by a scapel-wielding word autopist trying to resurrect the insufficiencies of the English manner of speaking, that balwark that assembles
nonanswers to specific heartaches of human endeavor, but here gets the results of the profound slashing, the dig to, instead of the take two, a quality reserved only for the few who slice to underneath hamlet’s melon(water?)cholic jockstrap rich kid problem, nor closer then to madame socrates’ reports of her errant husband’s (philosophical?) philanderings (there was mention of the Story of O in BL as I recall), although what’s coming up roses here is a stampede of buffalos through San Francisco streets when it’s raining enough flood the intersections with BEEG POEMS that make anyone feel they know this woman who writes with scissors, they know this is how they feel too sometimes but wouldn’t let anyone else know because that’s only up to those who tear at the wounds enough to strike goldrush veins, not that either, really because that’s not accounting for radioactivity, but those results are the must of descriptions that move the whole houses without ever harming
a tree, or whole mindsets without ever disturbing the furniture.

Just a thank you note for the two volumes, and congratulations for both a totally admirable production, silkscreening great!, and of course the content therein.
Extremely inspiring, Marie!

All best,

(signed) Randy

3 New Literary annual seeking submissions CLARA VENUS, fulva flava, Defect Cult

In 2005 Red Hand Press begins publishing 3 new literary annuals--Clara Venus http://ClaraVenus.BlogSpot.com
fulva flava http://fulvaflava,blogspot.com
, and Defect Cult http://DefectCult.BlogSpot.com

--in print and on-line versions-- ( 3 annual titles rather than
one quarterly). Writers & artists receive payment in contributors’ copies.
One year subscription $15. Single issue: $5.

Small Press poets, writers and artists may submit their work now for consideration for the inaugural issues. One submission opens you to consideration for all three publications--unless your (optional) cover letter indicates a preference.

SUBMIT:
Poetry: all forms and styles, prose poems
Prose: flash (500 words or less) fiction, memoir, creative nonfiction
Artwork:
Send your high contrast color and b&w graphics, drawings, prints, collages, paintings and photographs for consideration. By mail: submit clear clean photocopies of original images. Via e-mail: send JPEGs. Keep in mind the openness of these publications and the stated themes when submitting artwork.

Clara Venus http://ClaraVenus.blogspot.com

The name of this publication taken from Rimbaud’s poetry--his description of a lady emerging from her bath --*her buttocks engraved with the words Clara Venus ...
hideously beautiful...*

The focus of Clara Venus literary annual--the female outside roles and beyond
descriptions she’s commonly been written into. Let*s eradicate the last vestiges of those hackneyed stereotypes. You tell us in your words what they are/were and go beyond...

The theme(s) of the first issue: POSE, euphemism & images of the past

*There’s no deconstruction without the memory of the tradition.*
Jacques Derrida

Seeking unconventional writing/images on the conventional-- exposing the pose, truth and the untruthful, those who speak with forked tongue and role-play, ringers and replicas, pretensions, affectations, and the unpretentious, lifting the veil or mask, vintage poses of women on postcards, the female form as logo in advertisements, Barbie dolls and equivalents of today. How many euphemisms can you think of that name female body parts? Delving into family photos or your personal memories--the series of images seared into your brain--women you grew up hearing about--Indira Ghandi, Janice Joplin, the go-go dancers on TV. Images of the past--all the images you know about that contributed and shaped you as a women ( even before your were born).....where you are now and intend to go--tell us about a whole new world, a few words at a time...

fulva flava

Fulva Flava purportedly means *the woman of fire* in Latin-- as stated in Honore
de Balzac’s The Girl With The Golden Eyes.

Flava and Fulva are both associated with lilies & horticulture.

fulva flava the name chosen for the second Red Hand Press literary annual

as evocative of ripply lively female aspects--

where the hush-hush, not to be spoken-- will be...

pages for putting the indecent to question...

So froth forth and submit any very short prose and/or poetry and cover art
for, by & about the sexual intellectual exploring the wet spots...
of the unembarrassed female...

fulva flava http:llfulvaflava.blogspot.com

DEFECT CULT --- the fear and freedom issue

Defect Cult, the name for the 3rd Red Hand Press literary annual, derived
from a phrase within Chronicle of a Death Foretold, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
“ ...a poor woman devoted to the cult of her defects.”

The first issue of Defect Cult calling the *fear* issue--seeking writing on
*fear and the social facade* *female fears* *origins of fear(s)*
*overcoming fear(s)* *fear as control* *recognizing origins/breaking free*

*Poetry sustains life. Of this I am certain. There is no doubt in my mind that the
pain of poverty, whether material of emotional lack, can be eased by the power of
language. I know this intimately.*

do you buy/sell? small press publications regularly or occassionally, and where to you get them/sell them at?, stores, or subscribe/on-line orders?

sometimes I forget to give useful information to others unless some question comes up--then I'm reminded, oh yeah...
so I thought I'd ask--and I don't think it matters what city you live in, information & resources can be useful & thought-provoking etc. Here in San Francisco a collectively run *anarchist* bookstore on Haight Street called Bound Together has sold a total of 15 copies of my book titled Erratic Sleep in a Cold Hotel (over a period of approximately 3 or 4 years--I forget.) Well, that's a lot of copies for one store to sell. Employees in another (supposedly progressive) store in San Francisco told me they *never sold 3 copies of any book*, ever--that I must have sent people in to buy all three copies of by book that sold in their store--(annoyed at sales!? Does that make any sense?) Well, I suspect the photographer(a friend of many years) who did the bookcover and who lives in that neighbor told friends to go in and buy my book. (And I have many other similar tales dealing with bookstores) so I think Bound Together Bookstore has got to be one of the best stores around, I am usually treated well, often the person working is friendly and willing to talk--and they pay cash, boom, as soon as I ask will check the log book and pay up on sales...there's a place for flyers--both a rack and a board to post--my books are placed on a table with plenty of room around them--so I'd like to hear of
other good places to sell/buy small press publications--anywhere, any city, on-line, whatever...
